Shea Whigham says his time on the acclaimed HBO drama Boardwalk Empire left him with lifelong friendships that extend far beyond the show’s Prohibition-era setting.

Whigham, best known for his role as Eli Thompson in the series’ five-season run from 2010 to 2014, shared insights on the close personal and professional relationships he formed while working on the period crime drama.

Speaking at the New York City premiere of his new Netflix series Death by Lightning, Whigham described his Boardwalk Empire costars as more than colleagues, saying the ensemble’s bond “wasn’t just a job” and that the connections forged felt like family.

Among those he singled out were Steve Buscemi, who played Nucky Thompson, and longtime friend Michael Shannon, with whom he has since reunited on other projects.

According to People, Whigham also highlighted his strong relationship with director and executive producer Tim Van Patten as one of his closest friendships from the show's production.

Moreover, Whigham’s comments come as he promotes Death by Lightning, where he appears alongside Shannon once again, portraying 19th-century Republican politician Roscoe Conkling in the limited series.

The actor praised the creative atmosphere on the new project and joked about the charm of co-star Nick Offerman, noting the ease with which new friendships continue to form throughout his career.

With a resume that spans television and film, including roles in True Detective, Fargo, Silver Linings Playbook and Joker, Whigham said meaningful connections with fellow actors have been among the most rewarding aspects of his long and varied career.
