A new documentary exploring the life of comedian Chevy Chase offers a revealing portrait of the veteran entertainer, spotlighting both his early success and the painful experiences that shaped him.

I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, premiering January 1 on CNN, delves into the actor’s rise from a troubled youth to a comedy icon, and the personal and professional challenges he has faced along the way.

At the heart of the film is Chase’s candid account of his upbringing in New York, where he says he endured physical abuse from his mother and strict discipline from his stepfather.

According to People, the comedian described growing up in a household marked by violence and strict punishment, a reality that few people knew about until now.

The documentary also addresses darker chapters from Chase’s adult life, including struggles with depression, substance abuse and health problems, such as near-fatal heart failure that put him in a medically induced coma in 2021.

In addition to personal reflection, the film revisits controversies that affected his career, from clashes with colleagues to his controversial departure from the NBC sitcom Community after using a racial slur on set.

Moreover, some former castmates have publicly criticized Chase’s handling of past incidents and questioned the documentary’s framing of his childhood trauma.

Directed by Emmy-winner Marina Zenovich, I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not aims to present a nuanced view of a complex figure, balancing his groundbreaking contributions to comedy with his flawed humanity and the burdens of his past.
