Acclaimed British photographer, Martin Parr, dies at 73

Martin Parr, the renowned British documentary photographer whose bold and often humorous images captured the quirks of modern life, has died at the age of 73. 

He passed away at his home in Bristol on Saturday, December 6.

Magnum Photos, Parr’s longtime agency, confirmed the news in a statement: 

“It is with great sadness that we announce that Martin Parr (1952–2025) died yesterday at home in Bristol. He is survived by his wife Susie, his daughter Ellen, his sister Vivien, and his grandson George."

In the statement, the family asked for privacy at this critical time. 

"The Martin Parr Foundation and Magnum Photos will continue to preserve and share Martin’s legacy," the statement read. "He will be greatly missed.”

Parr, who was awarded a CBE for his contribution to photography, became a defining voice in visual storytelling. 

His work, characterised by vivid colour, flash-lit close-ups, and sharp social commentary, explored themes of consumer culture, class, and leisure. 

Often described by Parr as “serious photographs disguised as entertainment,” his images were both playful and penetrating, offering a window into society’s everyday absurdities.

Throughout his career, Parr’s photographs were exhibited worldwide and published in numerous acclaimed collections, cementing his status as one of the most influential photographers of his generation.
