Chris Pratt is entering the conversation after Oprah Winfrey sparked worldwide debate by praising new rules restricting social media access for children under sixteen.
The 46-year-old actor called the move “smart,” explaining that while he isn’t usually one to tell people how to parent, protecting kids online is an exception he strongly believes in.
“As much as I believe in liberty, I also believe that protecting kids from social media is really, really important,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star said, adding that he hopes other countries follow suit.
Pratt also described how he manages screen time in his own home. The actor who is father of four children, including a thirteen-year-old revealed that none of them have phones or personal devices.
He said he wants to keep them away from “passive algorithm-driven entertainment” and give them a healthier start.
“Data’s become the most valuable commodity in the world. Our attention is the new veins of gold and oil,” he added.
His comments come after Oprah Winfrey publicly endorsed the new rules during her Australian speaking tour, telling crowds the policy could “change the lives of an entire generation.”
She pointed to alarming research, including author Jonathan Haidt’s claim that 40% of American two-year-olds now use iPads.
With two major public figures aligning on the issue and critics warning of government overreach the debate surrounding kids and social media is only intensifying.
