George Clooney, who recently made headlines with his role in Jay Kelly, has revealed the very unglamorous job he worked long before becoming one of Hollywood’s most adored stars.

The 64-year-old actor left the audience roaring with laughter during his appearance on Live With Kelly and Mark as he recalled selling ladies’ shoes at McAlpin’s in Cincinnati when he was just 18.

Clooney said the role mostly involved dealing with “very old women” who would stick their feet right in his face while pointing out their “hammertoes”.

“It was a miserable job for us,” he joked, describing how he’d be handed feet with corns and bunions and was expected to treat them using a strange in-store ritual.

This included spraying blue powder on the corn, placing the foot into a special stretching shoe full of holes, and then using a little plastic model corn “like a Mr Potato Head” to guide the stretching.

“You stretched the corn hole, basically,” he laughed, clearly still traumatised.

The Oscar-winner also shared that he once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player.

Growing up near Cincinnati, he even had trials with the Cincinnati Reds.

During a recent visit, the team’s owner surprised him by making him an “official Red for a day”, and handing over his old scouting report.
