Matthew Perry’s family finally saw a measure of justice on Wednesday as his doctor, Salvador Plasencia, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison over the actor’s tragic death.
For the unknown, the beloved Friends star, 54, drowned accidentally in October 2023, with ketamine use cited as a key factor.
Salvador, one of five people convicted in connection with Perry’s death, was also ordered to pay a $5,600 (£4,195) fine.
Before the sentence, he broke down in court, apologising to Matthew’s family.
“I failed myself. There is no excuse. I can’t undo what’s been done,” he said, admitting he should have protected the star.
The Fools Rush In actor’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, didn’t hold back.
She read aloud texts showing Salvador had called her son a “moron” and speculated about how much he would pay for drugs.
“There was nothing moronic about that man,” she said, her voice shaking.
“He deserved protection, and you failed him.”
Salvador spoke of his own two-year-old son, saying he hopes to “raise him right” despite his mistakes.
Prosecutors had asked for three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine, which carries a maximum of 40 years.
Other figures in the case, including the “Ketamine Queen” Jasveen Sangha and Matthew’s former assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, are due for sentencing in the coming weeks.
Matthew Perry was never married. Although the he had a number of high-profile relationships throughout his life, he never walked down the aisle.
His most public romance in later years was with literary manager Molly Hurwitz, whom he began dating in 2018 and became engaged to in 2020.
However, the engagement ended in 2021, just over a year before his death.
Matthew had also previously dated actresses such as Lizzy Caplan and Julia Roberts, but none of these relationships led to marriage.
