Kamala Harris: Who she is and What she stands for

Kamala Harris made history by becoming the first woman and first person from South Asian and African descent to become the vice president of the United States.

History was already made when Joe Biden chose Kamala Harris as his running mate. In her victory speech she acknowledged that President-elect Joe Biden made a remarkable move by choosing her as she said, “He had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country and select a woman as his vice president”.

First female vice-president elect, Harris has been very open about her background. She is daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. By faith, Harris is Christian but she has gone to Hindu temples with her mother, and most importantly, she grew up within an interfaith and biracial family.

However, when she was young, her parents separated. She became the second Black woman to be a member of the US Senate. She attended Howard University in Washington and later earned a law degree from University of California.

Harris is known to be very fierce when it comes to social justice and police reforms in the Senate for which she was elected from California in the year 2017. Apart from that, the 55-year old was a district attorney in San Francisco as well.

Harris is the only woman who graduated from a Black college and will now be serving as the vice president of US. She is also part of Alpha Kappa Alpha which is the oldest black group in the US.

Harris always used her background to galvanize more people and a majority of the votes she received were from the Asian-American community which is rapidly growing in the US.

Her campaigns were diverse which resulted in more outreach as she attended rallies with many South Asian celebrities including Aasif Mandvi and Mindy Kaling.

In her campaigns, she targeted many Asian-American and Black voters because she used Korean, Filipino, Chinese, Tamil, Vietnamese and Hindi words.

Even, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi congratulated Harris and tweeted “matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans”.

"I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership" he added.
