Lily Allen has opened up about her surprise new album, West End Girl, admitting it was written in just 10 days after the end of her marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour.

The 40-year-old pop superstar revealed to CBS News that the record wasn’t created with sales in mind.

“At the time I wasn’t really thinking about it as a commercial endeavour, it was just… an act of desperation,” she said.

The Smile singer admitted she wasn’t even sure if she’d share the album with anyone.

She explained that you naturally start to doubt whether the work should ever be exposed to the world, but when you're actually creating it, the focus shifts inward and the process feels intimate and personal.

Despite the raw emotion behind the record, Lily stressed that West End Girl isn’t a “cruel album”.

Speaking to Interview magazine, she explained: “It’s not a cruel album. I don’t feel like I’m being mean. It was just the feelings I was processing at the time.”

Now, months on, the pop star insists she’s in a very different headspace.

“I wrote this record in 10 days in December and I feel very differently about the whole situation now,” Lily said.

“Breakups are always brutal, but I don’t feel confused or angry anymore. I don’t need revenge.”
