Labubu, a viral toy doll, is set to make its big-screen debut, with Sony Pictures developing a movie based on its character.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the agency has acquired the screen rights to the monstrous miniature.
The rights purchased as the illustrated that has recently become extremely popular and has become a global phenomenon.
However, it remains unclear whether the movie will be an animation or a live-action film. Also, no actors and directors are on board yet.
The toy was originally introduced by Hong Kong-born illustrator, Kasing Lung in 2015.
Despite Labubu's massive popularity, it's likely to be a hit, certain celebrities heightened the toy's fame. One includes Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink, who was seen using it as an accessory in 2024, influencing her fans all over the world.
The trend then moved to other K-pop stars and later the trend walked into Hollywood’s big names.
The character's craze was attributed to its unique design of large eyes, sharp teeth, and fuzzy outfits.
The marketing strategy of the blind-box sales model, where the design was anonymous, hyped its allure.
The company behind Labubu Pop Mart expects the character to become a billion-dollar business by the end of 2025.
