Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang have discussed the comedian’s role in Wicked, and how the singer had a much more integral part in it than many would assume.
The 35-year-old is a beloved cast member on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, which is why the No Tears Left To Cry singer had to petition for him to be in the musical with the creator of the show.
In Vanity Fair’s Lie Detector Test interview, the two-time Grammy winner impersonated Lorne Michaels and recalled the conversation she had with him for The Other Two actor.
Ariana said that upon her calling The Tonight Show producer, he asked her why she called to which she said, “I would love, I would do anything if we could make it happen for Bowen to come be in Wicked.”
Lorne replied, “Well you know, I mean, the reason why you want him,” after which the Bang Bang singer asked Bowen if she should stop imitating the SNL producer, to which he encouraged her to carry on since it was helping him be in the moment.
“Well you know, he’s everyone’s favourite on the show and that’s why you want him to be in Wicked so badly...so we need him to be in the show, but if you can work something out,” to which the co-stars agreed that they did indeed make things work.
Bowen and Ariana also agreed that the 80-year-old is intimidating and that they appreciate him and his efforts.
No, Ariana and Cynthia insisted on singing live on set for Wicked.
