SZA, real name Solána Rowe, has finally opened up about her high-profile online spat with Nicki Minaj, admitting she still has no idea how it started.
During a revealing interview with GQ for its November cover, the 35-year-old singer insisted there was “no backstory” behind their clash.
“I don’t know her. We have no connection to each other,” she said, adding she was surprised by the confrontation that unfolded on social media platform X earlier this year.
For those unfamiliar, the drama kicked off in July when the 42-year-old Trinidadian singer seemed to believe SZA had subtweeted her over a post mentioning the rapper’s former manager Terrence ‘Punch’ Henderson.
Nicki fired back with several scathing tweets, saying the Kill Bill crooner “look(ed) and sound(ed) like she got stung by a f****** bee.”
SZA later tried to step away, posting: “I don’t give a f*** bout none of that weird s*** you popping… Lmao lemme go back to being calm shy and meek.”
The Side to Side singer escalated the feud by criticising the Low hitmaker’s decision to re-release her 2022 album SOS as the deluxe version Lana, claiming the move lacked “morals and integrity.”
The Super Bass rapper also suggested that if SZA’s music vanished tomorrow, the industry “wouldn’t even miss her.”
All the Stars singer hit back, sharing a 2020 text from Nicki asking for a collaboration and reminding fans she co-wrote Nicki’s 2014 hit Feeling Myself with Beyoncé.
Even Cardi B waded in, questioning why Nicki had taken issue with SZA, writing on X: “Girl STFUUU done beefed with every black woman in the industry like girl who tf beef with SZA??”
Despite the feud, both stars remain chart-toppers, each boasting three No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
On the professional front, SZA dropped her Lana deluxe in December 2024, while Nicki’s latest album, Pink Friday 2, arrived in 2023.
Nicki Minaj’s main rivals in the music industry are fellow female rappers like Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion.
Cardi B has long been framed as her rival due to their high-profile clashes and contrasting styles, with both artists commanding massive fanbases and chart-topping hits.
Megan Thee Stallion, meanwhile, represents a younger generation of female rappers pushing boundaries in hip-hop, often competing with Nicki for streaming numbers, awards, and cultural influence.
