The original Harry Potter director, Chris Columbus, has no plans to be part of HBO’s reboot of J.K. Rowling's iconic book series.

The filmmaker, credited with bringing the characters to life on the silver screen, launched the blockbuster franchise more than two decades ago.

Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films and produced the third, but now he’s stepping away from Hogwarts.

“No, I’ve done it, you saw my version,” he told Variety while in London to promote Netflix’s Thursday Murder Club. “There’s nothing left for me to do in the world of Potter.”

That doesn’t mean he’s against the TV reboot. While he’s criticised the idea of remaking his 1990 classic Home Alone, he’s supportive of returning to the Wizarding World, and even admits he’s a little jealous.

“The great thing about it is that with the first, second, and third books, we wanted to include everything. We wanted to bring it all to the screen, but we didn’t have the opportunity,” he explained.

Speaking previously with Radio Times, Columbus admitted to having some regrets about his Harry Potter films.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone marked its 25th anniversary this year, yet Columbus still laments leaving out two major elements from the movie.

“It still keeps me up at night sometimes,” he confessed. “I regret not being able to put Peeves in the first film.”
