Chris Martin, the frontman of Coldplay, made a surprising revelation as he admitted he wasn’t always comfortable with the darker side of rock music.
The 48-year-old singer, known for chart-topping hits, revealed that as a teenager he refused to sing songs that mentioned the Devil, as he grew up in a strict Christian household.
He shared that when his school band suggested covering classics like Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones, he simply couldn’t go through with it.
Looking back, he laughed about it on the ABTalks podcast, saying he had felt such lyrics were inappropriate at the time.
“When I was about 15, there were songs I just couldn’t bring myself to sing. It felt wrong,” he recalled, before admitting he now views them simply as pieces of music.
The Sparks singer’s religious upbringing shaped his early years.
He described himself as an “alltheist,” believing God is everywhere, in everything, and beyond human understanding.
In a 2021 interview with Howard Stern, the pop star explained, “My God, for me, is all things and all.”
"And it’s just the point where you get to the place where you can’t think any further—that’s where I think God is.”
Notably, Coldplay’s biggest hits, from Fix You to Viva La Vida, have often carried spiritual themes.
Chris Martin was in a long-term relationship with actress Dakota Johnson, but the couple reportedly split in mid-2025 after nearly eight years together.
As of now, he has not been publicly linked to a new partner.
