Jenna Ortega, the macabre heroine of Wednesday, opens up about her new role as an executive producer for Season 2.
Speaking at a press conference held at a hotel in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, for the Netflix series Wednesday Season 2, Ortega shared her thoughts on the upcoming chapter.
"It was fantastic. Our collaborative relationship naturally evolved to a new level," Ortega said.
Ortega, who starred as the lead actress in the show, explained why she decided to also take on the role of producer for the new season.
"I had extensive discussions with the director and production team," she shared. "Being involved as a producer allowed me to engage more deeply with the storyline and narrative, rather than just participating as an actress."
The actress, widely recognised for her portrayal of the gothic-psychic Wednesday Addams, added: "Getting to know the project better before filming also helped with my acting. Personally, it felt like unlocking a secret door, making it a unique and fun experience."
Ortega leans naturally into the gothic and deadpan personality the show demands, embodying Wednesday as if it were in her blood.
Show producer Tim Burton has recently justified casting Ortega for the role, saying: "You can’t just ask somebody to do Wednesday Addams. They have to have it in their DNA. Jenna reminds me a bit of what Winona [Ryder] had when I first met her on Beetlejuice."
Praising Ortega’s performance, Burton added: "That silent movie actor thing, where they don’t have to say anything. You just have Jenna stare at you, and you knew right away that was Wednesday."
Wednesday Season 2, Part 1, is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 arrives Sept. 3.
