Col Joye, one of the founding figures of Australia’s rock and roll era, has passed away at the age of 89.

The Sydney-born performer first rose to prominence in 1959 when his single Bye Bye Baby topped national charts.

Notably, the singer became the household name as he marked a defining moment is the rise of locally produced rock.

He delivered a string of successful records that resonated with audiences across generations, throughout his extensive career.

Joye’s influence extended far beyond the recording studio, as he became a regular presence on television throughout the 1960s.

He appeared on widely-watched programmes including Bandstand and The Bert Newton Show.

Moreover, the music icon also played a crucial role in nurturing fresh talent.

For those unfamiliar, he co-founded the ATA talent agency with his brother Kevin.

The industry veteran was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1981, in recognition of his impact on the entertainment industry.

He was later celebrated with induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, affirming his place in the country’s cultural history.

After a near-fatal fall in 1990, the pop star defied the odds by making a full recovery and eventually returning to live performances.

The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
