DreamWorks’ animated heist comedy The Bad Guys has returned with a sequel full of playful banter and an emotional storyline, directed by Pierre Perifel.

This time, however, Perifel is joined by co-director JP Sans for The Bad Guys 2, which was released on August 1.

The movie features a space-themed storyline, which Perifel discussed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The interviewer asked the director about the challenges of filming the “going into space” scene.

“We were looking forward to that,” Perifel said. “It’s a dream to shoot something like this. The big challenge was making sure the audience would be on board with us, because it’s jumping the shark a little bit — sending a character clinging onto a rocket.”

The director explained that he wanted to make it feel realistic, so they used reference footage from NASA, Ad Astra, and Interstellar.

“Those movies have take-offs that were shot beautifully,” Perifel said. “We wanted to use that visual language to make sure the audience would come along with us and really feel the danger and power of it.”

The French filmmaker also noted that the music played a big role in supporting the scene.

So, when the characters arrive in space, “there’s that big release of ‘They did it,’” Perifel added.

The Bad Guy 2 is out in theatres now.
