King Charles’ wedding to Lady Diana is still one of the most remembered events of the 20th century.

The royal wedding took place on July 29, 1981 at St. Paul's Cathedral that was watched by a record-breaking 750 million viewers across 74 countries.

Even though the marriage was marred by issues, it is still considered a fairy tale wedding and often referred to as the staple for all weddings.

Princess Diana at the time was so full of joy she told Andrew Morton for his 1992 book, Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, “I remember being so in love with my husband that I couldn't take my eyes off him”.

Here are some lesser known details from the big event:

Princess Diana's dress had a record-breaking train

The bridal dress of Diana was designed by the then-married husband wife duo Elizabeth and David Emanuel. It took 3 months to make and embodied the perfect 1980’s style. The most jaw-dropping detail of the dress was the dramatic 25-foot long train and a 153-yard tulle veil.

Token of love for Charles in Diana’s shoes

When picking her wedding shoes, Diana was mindful not to a pair that would make her appear to be taller than her groom as she was 5 feet 10 inches tall already. Her shoes were crafted by cobbler Clive Shilto and the flats featured the letters “C” and “D” with a heart.

Queen Elizabeth II advised to keep two bouquets

The bride had two bouquets made that she was meant to carry down the aisle as advised by the Queen. The advice came after the monarch had lost the flowers during her own wedding, so she started the tradition to keep two identical bouquets for an emergency situation

The bride spilled perfume on her gown

Lady Diana walked down the aisle wearing her favourite perfume Quelques Fleurs. However, it was later revealed by Barbara Daly that she accidentally spilled the perfume on her dress while trying to put it on her wrists after getting ready. It left a spot on her dress that she was spotted covering with her hand.

Charles’ future queen was present at the venue

Diana infamously said there were three people in the marriage, the third one being Charles’ now-wife and the Queen of UK, Camilla. In 1981, Camilla, who was then married to Andrew Parker Bowles, was present at the cathedral as her husband was invited to the wedding.
