Stevie Wonder, who is notable for being amongst the most notable musicians of the 20th century, broke his silence to address rumours about his vision.
Although the 75-year-old lost his vision when he was six weeks, fans and celebrities still wonder if Stevie fakes his blindness.
During his Love, Light and Song tour, the Superstition hitmaker took a moment to shut down the speculation by saying: “you know the truth.”
A fan-filmed footage showed the legendary singer on the jumbotron spilling the truth, recalling: “Shortly after my birth, I became blind.”
However, the 25-time Grammy winner called it a “blessing” for himself as it has allowed him “to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight.”
In his speech, the musical genius added that he is able to see “people in the spirit of them” without judging them on the basis of their looks or “color.”
Although his mother cried a lot due to his condition, the Fingertips crooner believed that “God has something for me that’s bigger than all this. History proved that true.”
Apart from his fans, celebrities also speculated that his loss of vision was a hoax.
NBA star Shaquille O’Neal alleged that the singer was able to recognise him as they rode an elevator together.
In 2016, Anthony Anderson playfully remarked about the icon that he “can see,” adding that his blindness is “just an act.”
Stevie, whose original name is Stevland Hardaway Morris, was diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), which was caused by too much oxygen in the incubator.
The disease causes disoriented growth of eyes, resulting in retinal detachment.
