Barry Keoghan disclosed a deeply personal struggle that he has in common with his parents, which was perpetuated by the pressures of Hollywood.
The 32-year-old stated that he was not ready to admit that he was a substance abuser, but has decided to confront the situation now.
In an interview with Authentic Hollywood, the father of one acknowledged, “I’m not in denial anymore. I understand that I do have an addiction, and I am an addict.”
The BAFTA award winner opened up about his family, saying that his mother passed away due to a heroin addiction when he was a preteen, ad his father died of “similar” causes.
Barry noted that a combination of factors, namely the strains of Hollywood life along with his personal curiosity drove him down the dangerous path.
He continued, “You know, you go to LA, you go to Hollywood, wherever the big scene is, there’s an enormous amount of pressure, and a different lifestyle that is good and bad for you. You’re around the scene. You just happen to be the one that ends up doing it.”
The Irish star candidly noted that he also had scars to prove his addiction, before saying that he has now started taking accountability of his actions.
Barry remarked, “I feel like I’ve arrived. I apologize, too, mainly to myself more than anything else for all the pain I’ve put people and myself through.”
