Sesame Street has struck a deal with popular streaming platform Netflix which will lead to the show being moved to it after President Donald Trump cut funding from the free-to-air channel Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).

Netflix said in a statement that the show is a "beloved cornerstone of children's media, enchanting young minds and nurturing a love of learning".

The platform will be offering subscribers new seasons of the show as well as 90 hours of the older episodes, which will still also be available on PBS.

Sesame Street had already been in uncertain waters after the owners of the HBO platform, Warner Bros. Discovery did not renew their contract with the show.

Earlier in May, Trump released an executive order to cut federal funding for PBS and the National Public Radio (NPR) network, citing the reason that they partook in "biased and partisan news coverage.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which was the government body that had backed the funding for the two broadcasters then announced the end of the federal initiative that had funded children’s shows, which included Sesame Street.

In keeping with the new deal, PBS will be getting the new episodes of the show the same day they are released on Netflix.
