Selena Gomez says being open about her mental health hasn’t been easy but it’s been worth it.
In a new Billboard Español interview, the singer and actor, 32, opened up about why she continues to speak out despite the criticism.
“It’s not for the faint of heart,” she admitted. “You are putting yourself out there and trust me, there will be a lot of opinions.”
Gomez, who’s being honoured as Woman of the Year at the 2025 Billboard Latin Women in Music event, said the fear of being vulnerable nearly stopped her from opening up.
“It was scary to be that vulnerable… I didn’t ever want anyone to think I am a victim,” she shared.
But she says the bigger picture mattered more.
“By sharing my own story I could help others… I will take any negative opinions that come with that.”
In 2020, she revealed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“I struggled for so long… I felt lost. Getting my diagnosis finally gave me the answers I was desperate for,” she said at last year’s Rare Impact Benefit.
Her 2022 Apple TV+ doc My Mind & Me also followed her mental health journey — and fans praised her bravery for showing the raw moments.
