Prince Harry reveals 'very saucy' secret date with Meghan Markle inside a supermarket

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s early relationship was full of romance, secrecy, and—surprisingly—supermarket disguises.

In his bombshell memoir Spare, Prince Harry pulls back the curtain on the undercover escapades he shared with Meghan Markle during the early days of their whirlwind romance.

The Duke of Sussex reveals that back in 2016, when the couple was still trying to keep their budding relationship away from the public eye, they went to extreme lengths to remain undetected, even during a simple grocery run.

After spending the night together at London’s exclusive Soho House, the pair planned a cozy meal with friends. But before they could cook, they needed ingredients.

However, they couldn’t be seen together in public: “Of course we couldn’t actually go to Waitrose together: that would cause a riot,” Harry wrote, explaining their stealthy plan to shop “simultaneously, in parallel, and in disguise.”

Meghan arrived first, dressed down in a flannel shirt, an oversized coat, and a beanie. And her cart was casually loaded with suitcases and Soho House bags filled with luxurious dressing gowns.

Harry followed minutes later, blending in with a basket in hand, pretending to be just another shopper.

“Beside the fruit and veg I felt her stroll past me. Actually, it was more a saunter than a stroll,” Harry recalled. “Very saucy. We slid our eyes towards each other, just an instant, then quickly away.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met in July 2016 through a mutual friend and quickly began dating. By November, their relationship was confirmed publicly, and they made their first official appearance together at the 2017 Invictus Games. 

The couple announced their engagement later that year and were married on May 19, 2018. They welcomed their son, Archie, in 2019, followed by daughter Lilibet in 2021.
