Meghan Markle has revisited the heartbreaking experience of miscarriage during a deeply personal conversation on her new podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder.
In a new episode, the Duchess of Sussex speaks with Indian-American lawyer and politician Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code and Mom’s First, discussing motherhood, loss, and the silent burdens many women carry.
Meghan, 43, reflected on the miscarriage she and Prince Harry experienced, a topic she first shared publicly in 2020.
Revisiting the emotional toll of that loss, she told Reshma: “I have spoken about the miscarriage we experienced. And I think in some parallel way, when you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for and to be able to be OK at a certain point to let something go, something go that you planned to love for a long time.”
Reshma, who has also publicly shared her fertility struggles, responded emotionally: “I feel like you are reading my diaries... That’s really insightful. I don’t think anyone has said it that way for me, but that’s right.”
She went on to describe the pain of repeated miscarriages due to autoimmune issues, adding: “I got into this scary habit where I’d be in a doctor’s office and they’d say, ‘There’s no heartbeat.’"
"And I should have gone home and curled up with my husband, but I would just take a breath and show up on a stage and perform. I was just performing to these children that I desperately wanted.”
The episode also delves into the mental load of working mothers and the unrealistic expectations placed on women to “keep smiling” through adversity.
“We’re not allowed to break,” Meghan said, echoing a sentiment many working mothers can relate to.
