Good American Family’s cast and creators sat down at a panel where they discussed the Hulu series that is inspired by the real life story of Natalia Grace.

Attending the panel was star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo (Kristine Barnett), Mark Duplass (Michael Barnett), Imogen Faith Reid (Natalia Grace), Christina Hendricks (Cynthia Mans), Sarayu Blue (Valika), Dulé Hill (Detective Brandon Drysdale), Katie Robbins (creator, showrunner, and executive producer), Sarah Sutherland (showrunner and executive producer), and Liz Garbus (director), moderated by Emily Longeretta (Variety).

Discussing taking on her first major role since Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo said, "I was sent the pilot, I read it, and I said, 'This story is incredible. Why would I ever want to do this? I would have to be crazy!' Then my agent said, 'You should definitely do this.' The last time he said that to me was on a show called Grey's Anatomy."

Meanwhile making her TV debut, Reid revealed, "I saw the self-tape through my agent and I thought, 'Well, I'm not going to get that. But, whoever gets it — slay. After four recalls, I got the job and it was just such an incredible moment. When researching the story, I was so fascinated by it. As a little person, I just felt like I know what it's like to be judged in everyday life and going through those daily struggles of being small. I thought, 'Yeah, I can take this on.' And I did!"

Duplass, who credited the creators, stated, "It all started with Katie and Sarah. When I sat down with them they said, 'Look, we're not going to be doing an impersonation here. You're going to play a character, Michael Barnett, we're going to build this thing together. They started talking to me about these issues that Michael's dealing with — a terrible upbringing and mental health issues.”

He continued, “I've spoken about my own mental health issues. It's something I really believe in demystifying. Then, I started to learn more and more about the story and this savior complex that he shares with Kristine. It felt so complicated and nuanced...I wasn't really sure about it and then they were like, 'Well, Ellen Pompeo is going to be in it,' and I was like, 'I'll do it! Let's go!'"

Set to be an 8 episode series, Good American Family will be premiering on Hulu on March 19.
