Fans of the K-pop group BTS are criticizing Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascon, known for starring in the Oscar nominated film, Emilia Perez, after her old tweets resurfaced.
One tweet in particular, targeting BTS reappeared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Fans of the group quickly took to social media to express their anger over the comments.
One user commented, “Can we go just one day without BTS or Asians in general being disrespected, dehumanized, and disregarded as humans? I’m so tired. Why do racists keep getting jobs. Why do people keep employing garbage. I don’t want to see this woman have a platform. I don’t want to see her in the media.”
Another added, “as an east asian person myself...I am really tired of it being "ok" to be so racist towards us. like...seriously. I am 47 f****** years old and teasing started when I was in kindergarten about my eyes. and what is really stupid is that I was born in LA!!! lots of asians in socal, lots of east asians in socal but I still got teased.”
Gascon then ended up releasing an apology through Variety, however, whether she was directly referring to her tweets against BTS is unclear as it was not mentioned.
“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” she stated, “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
Sofia Gascon has been nominated in the Oscars for the Best Actress category.
