Netflix Colombia triggered the sentiments by sharing a sneak peek into the drama series on Instagram on Thursday, January 27, tagging the Modern Family alum.
The teaser was met with mixed reactions, with some fans expressing excitement over the bold characte,r while others criticized Vergara's choice of role.
In the comment section, one social media user voiced her disappointment, expressing frustration over the portrayal of Colombians as narcos and being involved in human trafficking, murders, and drugs
"I'm disappointed by a person who calls herself Colombiana and lends herself to such barbarity, Sofia Vergara doesn't represent me as Colombiana," she wrote.
The user went on to explain, "WE COLOMBIANS ARE TIRED OF THE NARCOS SERIES, THAT DOESN'T IDENTIFY US. It's time that we are identified on the outside as kind, uplifting, peaceful, happy, hardworking people, eager to move forward through legitimate activities."
She then touched upon the various other aspects her country can be represented beyond violence and narcos, "COLOMBIA IS MORE THAN NARCOTRAFFIC AND VIOLENCE, COLOMBIAN IS COFFEE, FLOWERS, MUSIC, FOLKLORE, TOURISM, ECOLOGY, BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPERS, UNIQUE FLORA AND FAUNA, FRIENDLY AND UPCOMING PEOPLE…"
