Ryan O’Neal, who boosted his career with his breakthrough role as Rodney Harrington on ABC nighttime soap opera Peyton Place, has passed away at the age of 82.

The actor’s death was confirmed by his son, Patrick O’Neal via a lengthy Instagram post on Friday, December 8.

The 56-year-old son penned the “toughest thing he ever said” in a caption, writing, “My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting him.”

Despite a “very difficult” time for him and his wife Summer, Patrick went on to share an “idea of how great a man” his father was.

After confessing that his father has always been his “hero,” he shed light on Ryan's romance with his mother.

Patrick shared that his father met his mother, Leigh Taylor-young, on the set of Peyton Place.

Nine months after going out on a date or two, they welcomed Patrick in 1967, notably, by that time Ryan was already a TV star on the show.

The American sportscaster reflected on his father’s “decade” that he absolutely crushed.

“My dad became an international movie star with Love Story at the beginning of the 1970’s,” Patrick noted.

He also highlighted some of his projects, including What’s Up, Doc? (1972), Paper Moon (1973), Barry Lyndon(1975), A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Driver (1978) and The Main Event (1979).

“He is a Hollywood legend. Full Stop, “ he affirmed.

The bereaved actor posted several tributes for his father on social media gushing over Ryan as a journal writer, remarkable actor, avid reader and most notably a supportive father.
