Chris Kelly was only 34 years old when he was announced dead in 2013.
The late singer was part of one of the youngest hip-hop duos Kris Kross alongside his longtime friend Chriss Smith.
Who was Kris Kross?
The hip-hope duo rose to fame in the early ‘90s after being discovered by veteran rapper Jermain Dupri in 1991.
Kris Kross comprised of friends Kelly and Smith, both of whom went by pseudonyms Mac Daddy and Daddy Mac respectively.
After being brought into the spotlight by Dupri, Kris Kross released their debut single, Jump, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, landing itself a double platinum certification.
Besides their impressive rapping skills, Kelly and Smith gained notoriety for their signature fashion style – wearing their clothes backward.
Born in Georgia on August 11, 1978, Kelly co-founded Kris Kross with Smith in the late ‘80s.
He studied engineering at Woodward Academy in College Park, Georgia, before being discovered by Dupri for his singing skills.
Following their debut in the public eye, Kris Kross signed a deal with Ruffhouse Records.
Chris Kelly was reported dead on May 1, 2013, following a drug overdose. He was 34.
According to autopsy reports, the late rapper had heroin and cocaine in his system at the time of death.
Fellow rappers expressed their grief after the news of his death made waves on the internet.
"R.I.P Chris Kelly. This song is now officially dedicated to you. May GOD embrace your soul & lift up your family,” LL Cool J wrote on Twitter at the time.
