Sophia Nahli Allison is a photographer and experimental documentary filmmaker from Los Angeles, California, who is 36 years old. The 2020 United States Artists Fellow, sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, divides her time between Durham, North Carolina, and her hometown.
Sophia Nahli Allison, a photojournalist graduate of Columbia College Chicago, also holds a master's in visual communication from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. According to United States Artists, she excels at evoking ancestor memories and bridging the gap between fiction and non-fiction narration.
In addition to being a 3Arts Fellow at France's The Camargo Foundation in 2019, Sophia Nahli Allison also worked as a resident and fellow at The Macdowell Colony. She has also participated in African Interactive Art Residency programmes run by POV Spark and The Centre for Photography in New York.
In the wake of the accusation against Lizzo, Sophia Nahli Allison also shared her side of the story that why she quit after working with Lizzo for 2 weeks back in 2019 as she was "treated with such disrespect" by her.
The filmmaker after learning about the lawsuit, couldn’t help but speak up. She captioned her tweet:
"Sharing this because validating other Black women’s experiences is deeply important to me."
About the lawsuit, Lizzo, a Grammy Award-winning musician, is being sued by three of her former dancers who claim she sexually harassed them and created a hostile work environment. On Tuesday, August 1, Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez filed the complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
