Leaked behind-the-scenes footage from the highly-anticipated film Wicked has sent fans into a frenzy of excitement. The movie draws inspiration from Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel.
The sneak peek gave a glimpse of the cast, with Cynthia Erivo portraying Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande as Glinda Upland. The dynamic between the two iconic characters became a major talking point in the footage.
The BTS reel also showcased Erivo and Grande's powerful rendition of Defying Gravity, Director John M. Chu's dedication to practicality was evident, with the crew planting a staggering 9 million real multi-coloured tulips for one set, creating an expansive and visually stunning landscape of Oz. Early VFX of the flying monkeys added to the film's fantastical elements.
Chu, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians, praised the scale of the project, as Wicked stands as his most ambitious undertaking to date.
While some may still have mixed feelings about Wicked being split into two parts, the grandeur and scale of the project hinted at the potential justification for the decision.
The story follows a green-skinned woman, framed by the enigmatic Wizard of Oz, as she embarks on a transformative journey that leads her down the path of becoming the iconic and misunderstood Wicked Witch.
Fans of the beloved musical can look forward to the big-screen adaptation, which is set to hit theatres on November 27, 2024.
