Live-Action ‘Moana’ Trailer, are Dwyane Johnson and Zendaya really starring?
Disney CEO Bob Iger and actor Dwayne Johnson (Black Adam) made the official announcement that the tale of Moana and Maui would be brought back to the big screen in a live-action retelling about four months ago. Recently, a trailer showing Johnson and the titular character—none other than Zendaya—has gone viral online.
The live-action machinery of The Walt Disney Company continues to advance. The Little Mermaid (2023), featuring Halle Bailey as the titular sea creature Ariel was the most recent instalment in the remake series to be produced by the House of Mouse back in May. Disney's live-action remakes have received varying reviews over the years, but the company has never been clearer about its intention to carry on the tale.
Beginning in April, returning CEO Bob Iger announced the upcoming live-action adaptation of the 2016 film Moana by introducing actor-wrestler Dwayne Johnson from the Hawaiian island of O'ahu. Johnson, who most recently played Frank Wolff in Jungle Cruise (2021), said that all of the beloved Disney animated characters, including Moana, Maui, Hei Hei, Pua, Gramma Tala, and Te Fiti, would be making a comeback in this version.
The announcement of a live-action Moana was met with both praise and criticism from the fanbase. While some praised Disney for reassigning Johnson to lead the remake, others criticized the company for choosing to remake the beloved animated film so soon. More debates over Disney's lack of original storytelling and how the firm is putting too much effort towards retelling were also sparked by this.
Johnson's character Maui has not yet been included in the official cast list, but he is anticipated to return to the demigod role as of the time of publication. Auli'i Cravalho, who played Moana's main character, stated earlier this year via Instagram that she would not be a part of the live-action version but would instead serve as executive producer.
The opportunity for a new actress to play Moana is now open as a result, and a brand-new trailer with Zendaya and Dwayne Johnson's demigod Maui has gone viral online.
Of course, this "teaser trailer" was made by fans and is in no way associated with Disney. This hasn't stopped the trailer from becoming viral on social media, though. On YouTube, the aforementioned video has amassed over 100,000 views, while the teaser for it on TikTok has received tens of thousands of likes and views.
Despite being untrue, it hasn't prevented fans from either hoping that Zendaya, who is most known for her roles as Rue in HBO's Euphoria and as MJ in the Spider-Man movie, will play Moana.
Moana will be produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Seven Bucks Productions, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia. The director is Thomas Kail.
