The 'Minecraft' Movie is on the way, and fans are curious.

Since initially revealing their aspirations for a Minecraft movie in 2014, Warner Brothers and Mojang have swapped teams numerous times throughout the years.

Before finally abandoning the project, several filmmakers were attached and the movie went through a number of revisions. It appears that the much-delayed and extensively revised Minecraft movie is finally coming together with a director, an A-list star, and a set release date.

Even though the projected release date for the movie is still two years away, no promotional materials for it have yet been made public.

The Minecraft Movie: Release Date

The release date for the Minecraft movie has been changed several times. Rob McElhenney's version was originally scheduled for May 24, 2019, but after he left and Peter Sollett was hired, the release date was changed to March 4, 2022, and then the film was taken off the calendar. Warner Bros. just disclosed April 4, 2025, as a new release date for the movie. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly and the movie will be released on time.

The Minecraft Movie: Theatrical Release

Currently, it seems that the Minecraft movie will be released in theatres in April 2025.

The Minecraft Movie: Will it be Streaming and where?

The Minecraft movie is most likely to spend some time in theatres before it is eventually made available on a streaming service. Although a lot can change in two years, it's likely that Minecraft will eventually move to the recently redesigned streaming service of Warner Bros. - Max.

With Hess in charge of the direction and Momoa in the lead roles, it appears like the Minecraft movie is back on track. We expect to see this film arrive in theatres on schedule and look forward to learning more about it as it develops.

The Minecraft movie: The Lead and The stars

The Minecraft movie will star Jason Momoa, as was confirmed in April 2022. With his roles as Aquaman in the DCEU and the main antagonist in this summer's Fast X, Momoa has had a busy schedule recently.

Although we don't know much about the role Momoa will be portraying just yet, it's probable that it will be "Steve," the game's most recognisable player avatar. (Alex is the standard feminine avatar.)

Matt Berry, who starred in What We Do in the Shadows, was confirmed to be joining Momoa in the cast in May 2023 in an unspecified role.

You might have heard that Steve Carell was going to be a star in the Minecraft movie, but that is no longer true. Although Carrell's involvement in the film was widely reported in 2016, much has changed since then, and it is now thought that The Office and Despicable Me star is no longer involved.

The Minecraft Movie: About the plot

There is very little plot information available for the movie. There have been several distinct iterations of the project, and it is unknown whether any of the specifics from those earlier iterations will be included in this film.

A previous draft of the film was going to focus on the idea of "people taking agency over their experience in [the] digital landscape," and another plot was going to tell "the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers" who must save their Overworld from an Ender Dragon. It's not clear if either of those plots will still be used.

Of course, the plot has never been a focus of the game Minecraft itself. Instead, it is an open-world building and survival game in which players build sophisticated and detailed structures while attempting to fend off attacks from monsters like creepers, zombies, and skeletons.

The numerous play modes in Minecraft let players concentrate on the parts of the game they like best, whether that's cooperative play, survival, or building.

The Nether, a perilous and terrible world, and The End, a collection of floating islands watched over by the vicious Ender Dragon, are two notable places despite the game's absence of a plot.

Additionally, it has certain well-known foes like Endermen and Creepers. We anticipate the film will want to emphasise these venerable and recognisable villains.

The Minecraft Movie: The Creative Team

A lot more changes have taken place behind the scenes than there have been to the Minecraft cast. The Minecraft movie's original director was Shawn Levy, who also directed Night at the Museum, The Adam Project, and Free Guy. Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) wrote the screenplay.

But in 2014, all three of them quit the project, citing "creative differences" with the video game's developers Mojang. A few weeks after his departure, Levy discussed the project in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He described it as an action movie with "a bit of a Goonies flair."

Nearly two years later, it was revealed that Rob McElhenney (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), who co-wrote the script with Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), will be directing the movie. The movie's producer, Roy Lee, said in a 2016 interview with Collider that the movie would have centred on the idea of player agency and what that implies in a virtual open-world experience.

The project was very close to being realised, according to McElhenney, who discussed it with Josh Horowitz on the "Happy Sad Confused Podcast," but it was realised that his version of the project was no longer consistent with the studio's vision after Greg Silverman was replaced as studio head by Toby Emmerich.

In 2018, Adam and Aaron Nee (The Lost City) were hired to rewrite the script after McElhenney quit the project. Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist) was hired to helm the movie a few months later, in the early months of 2019.

The female lead in Sollett's adaptation of the story would have faced an Ender Dragon. A few months later, it was revealed that the Nee Brothers would no longer be writing the script and that Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures) would be taking over.

Obviously, this has now altered, and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) was ultimately chosen to helm the picture. Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, who previously collaborated with Hess on the 2016 heist comedy film Masterminds, did the writing for the movie.

The Minecraft movie: Location

According to a report from Production Weekly, shooting for the Minecraft movie is scheduled to start on August 7 in New Zealand.
