Robert De Niro embodied his character in his latest flick with a certain real-life personality in mind.

During the press conference for Killers of the Flower Moon at the Cannes Film Festival, the 79-year-old actor revealed that he struggled to connect with his character in the crime epic, saying: “I don’t understand a lot about my character.”

“Part of him is sincere. The other part, where he’s betraying [the Osage people], there’s a feeling of entitlement,” the actor analyzed, alluding to the resurgence of white supremacy. “We became a lot more aware [of that dichotomy] after George Floyd with systemic racism.”

“It’s the banality of evil. It’s the thing we have to watch out for. We see it today, of course. We all know who I’m going to talk about. but I’m not going to say the name,” continued De Niro, referring to Donald Trump.

“That guy is stupid,” he said of the former president. “Imagine if you’re smart. Even Hale was smart in many ways.”

The actor also called out the Republicans and their blind loyalty to “evil” men, noting, “There are people who still think he can do a good job. Imagine how insane that is.”

Killers of the Flower Moon was embraced by the audience of the Film Festival with raucous applause and a 9-minute standing ovation.
