REAL reason why Shazam! Fury of Gods DIPPED at global box office

Shazam: Fury of Gods was met with a lackluster reception at the global box office as well as critical reviews

By George Johnson March 22, 2023

The unanticipated failure of Shazam 2 at the international box office has prompted the associates to raise their fingers at unlikely perpetrators.

Zachary Levi’s-starrer sequel titled   Fury of Gods debuted with a disappointing $65.5 million globally, unarguably more than Black Adam’s embarrassingly low score of $26.7 million.

Despite the film still being in its opening days, fans as well as Levi himself have started dissecting its inevitable dip at the box office and have narrowed down a few parties to blame, including Warner Bros. for their below-par marketing skills, unconvincing storyline, Zack Snyder fans’ eschewal against watching it, and Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson.

 Zack Snyder Fans' Protest:

Snyder was shoved to the sidelines after the new CEOs of DC took over the franchise last October, as did a number of impending films and recurring actors.

Since then, fans of the Justice League director have been avoiding the upcoming DC projects like a plague, hence offering Levi a convincing argument for the dip.

Taking to Twitter, the actor agreed with fans affirming that Snyder fans were “apparently rooting for the film’s failure.”

“But how much that actually affects the box office is anyone’s guess,” he noted.

Warner Bros. Amateur Marketing Strategy:

The Chuck alum didn’t hold back from throwing Warner Bros.’s marketing strategy under the bus, writing: “But I think the biggest issue we’re having is marketing.

"This is a perfect family movie, and yet a lot of families aren’t aware of that. Which is just a shame,” he wailed.

It was brought to light that the superhero film wasn’t promoted as a family-friendly film, directing the blame on airing its trailer at the Super Bowl 2023 just before that of the upcoming R-rated horror movie, Scream VI.

David F. Sandberg Takes A  Back Seat:

In addition to the film’s lackluster performance at the box office, the Fury of Gods also received tons of negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering a sublime score of 53% which keeps on dipping.

Director David F. Sandberg was just as taken aback by the film’s negative reactions as were the other cast members, including Rachel Ziegler.

“On Rotten Tomatoes I just got my lowest critic score and my highest audience score on the same film,” wrote Sandberg on Twitter. “I wasn’t expecting a repeat of the first movie critically but I was still a little surprised because I think it’s a good film.”

Deflated, he announced that he will not be making any more superhero movies, adding that it has been a source of stress for him.

“After six years of Shazam I’m definitely done with superheroes for now,” he explained. “One thing I’ve really been looking forward to is disconnecting from the superhero discourse online. A lot of that stresses me out so much and it will be nice not having to think about that anymore.”

Zachery Levi vs. Dwayne Johnson  Showdown:

Despite Shazam’s fans finding Levi a string of reasons to hold on to through his current fiasco, the actor seems to be stuck in a cycle of frustration.

The Alvin and the Chipmunks star divided fans on the internet after his most recent stint, where he straight-up blamed Dwayne Johnson for the financial bomb.

There had always been rumors about Johnson keen on having his DC character face off with Henry Cavill’s Superman, contrary to the comic books where Shazam is his sore enemy.

Now, Levi seemed to have confirmed the rumors following his vocal agreement with the controversial The Wrap piece, which alleged that The Rock had vetoed a planned post-credits scene in Black Adam, which would have seen Shazam recruited by Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, and other costumed heroes, into the Justice Society of America.”

In the piece, the media outlet explained that provided Johnson had “allowed” Levi’s Shazam to appear on the Black Adam’s post-credit scene instead of Cavill’s Superman, the move would have played a catalyst to boosting the audience’s interest in Shazam 2, ergo a box office success.

Film Critics are Apalled:

Levi’s controversial stance has sent the intellectual side of the internet into a frenzy, who argue that the actor’s maneuver is a beginning of a feud between him and Johnson.

A film critic, Grace Randolph termed the notion “insane,” expressing hope that the Jumanji actor doesn’t “take the bait” and respond.

Meanwhile, another critic named Craig Lin offered a brief insight into his two cents on “the whole Shazam/Black Adam drama.”

He noted that the sequel was “always set for failure with several factors contributing” and playing the blame game is doing nothing but highlight a “concerning trend of deflecting responsibility.”

“By solely blaming The Rock and not acknowledging their own missteps, Warner Bros is failing to take accountability for their own actions once again,” he wrote.
