Some notable snubs in Oscars 2023 nominations

Like every year, there are many reasons to be happy about this year's Academy Award nods, but there were also some conspicuous omissions.

Two of today's biggest pop stars, Rihanna and Lady Gaga, will compete in the Best Original Song category; the former for Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the latter for Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick

Taylor Swift, whose song Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing was shortlisted for a potential candidature, was not included.

Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Williams, and Michelle Yeoh all received awards for their performances in the highly competitive Best Actress category.

Sadly, this eliminated Danielle Deadwyler from Till and Viola Davis from The Woman King off the cast. For her starring performance, Davis received Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations, while Deadwyler took home the top prize at the first Gotham Awards.

Tom Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick and Adam Sandler for his work in the Netflix basketball thriller Hustle were snubbed in the Best Actor category. Sandler was recently honoured with a nomination by the SAG Awards, whilst Cruise had garnered praise from the Golden Globes.

James Cameron, the self-proclaimed King of the World, did receive several nominations for his epic follow-up Avatar: The Way of the World, including one for Best Picture, but he was left out of the Best Director category.

On Sunday, March 12, Jimmy Kimmel will host this year's ceremony, which will be broadcast live on ABC.
