Martin Luther King Jr. sculpture in Boston receives backlash online

Martin Luther King Jr.’s recently-unveiled sculpture has raised more eyebrows than hands.

On Friday, Jan. 13, multiple civic organizations unveiled a 22-foot-tall bronze statue in Boston Common, sculpted by Hank Willis Thomas.

The sculpture features the limbs of the revolutionist and his wife, Coretta Scott King intertwined together.

As per reports, Thomas took inspiration from the photograph of the pair embracing after Martin won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.

“This work is really about the capacity for each of us to be enveloped in love, and I feel enveloped in love every time I hear the names and see the faces of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King,” Thomas told the Boston Globe.

People were rightfully offended at the hindrance to depicting the civil rights pioneers in full.

“It doesn't sit well with me that Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King are reduced to body parts-- just their arms. Not their faces- their expressions,” a user on Twitter complained. “For such a large statue, dismembering MLK and Coretta Scott King is... a choice. A deliberate one.”

“I want to understand that headless Martin Luther King statue so bad. But it just feels so racist to me? Y’all made a statue of his arms ONLY? HEADLESS! Y’all wasn’t comfortable putting his face in it?” another tweeted.

“This statue is such an abomination to the memory of Dr Martin Luther King,” a third said.
