Gloria Steinem defends Meghan Markle's presence, says 'she's different'

The bond between Gloria Steinem and Meghan Markle is still alive and kicking.

Last week, co-founder of the Women's Media Center Gloria Steinem discussed her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex at the 2022 Women's Media Awards.

Steinem offered nothing but praise for her friend, whom she referred to as a "great human being," when asked about why she collaborated with Meghan for an open discussion about reproductive rights in Vogue earlier this year.

"I'm not an expert on the media, but it seems to me that she is different from the picture of her in the media," the feminist activist told People magazine.

"She's smart and funny and devoted to social issues."

"Maybe it's the British tabloids that are the problem," Steinem added with a chuckle.

It wasn't the first time the two had linked up when they spoke earlier this year. Two years ago, Steinem, 88, and Meghan, 41, got together to have a "backyard chat" about the value of voting.

"For a while, we were living almost next… well, what in California counts as next door, which is like 45 minutes away," Steinem said. "So we got to know each other."

During their conversation in 2020, Steinem granted the Duchess a bracelet that reads: "We are linked not ranked."

While accepting it, Meghan said that the phrase "means everything to me on every level," and it resumes to hold great significance to the feminist icon.

"I think we as human beings — or maybe living things on planet Earth, right? — are linked, not ranked," Steinem told the outlet.

"We have systems of race and gender and class that rank us, and that's actually not accurate."
