Katie Ledecky now holds the world record for fastest 1500m short-course freestyle

Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky made waves when she obliterated a world record at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Toronto.

In the 1500m short-course freestyle, the American completed the race in 15:08.24,10 seconds less than anyone has ever done.

The seven-time Olympic gold medalist was met with roaring applause while swimmers around her continued to finish the race.

"Honestly most of that emotion was just because it hurt a lot so when something hurts that much you want to see a great result like that," Ledecky said after.

"I felt good and very pleased with the outcome in both that and the 200m.

"I didn’t have it as a set goal (to break the world record).

"I really didn’t know what to expect coming out of this meet, being my first meet of the season, taking most of August off, getting back into training rhythm, didn’t have any type of super preparation for this meet, just wanted to come in and race international swimmers being a meet in North American soil."
