R.E.M. had their 1991 music video Losing My Religion become a global hit which has now skyrocketed with a billion views on Youtube.

Variety reported that Losing My Religion has gone past 1 billion views on Youtube more than one decade after it was first uploaded to YouTube in July 2011 and hit the 1-billion mark within the past week in September 2022.

The music video was directed by filmmaker Tarsem Singh and produced in a 4:3 aspect ratio before HD became widely adopted.

In 2016 Tarsem Singh spoke to Rolling Stone and said that the inspiration for the music video was taken from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings, in which a mysterious figure, seemingly an angel, appears in a small seaside town.

The alternative band's music video won two Grammys and a video of the year award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1991.

R.E.M. disbanded in 2011, and in 2021, lead singer Michael Stipe said in an interview, "We will never reunite."
