Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl held back tears as he performed the band's first gig since drummer Taylor Hawkins died in March.
The singer was performing Times Like These when he paused to reflect on the lyric: "It's times like these you learn to love again."
Previously, Grohl depicted Hawkins as his "dear friend, bandmate and brother".
He said of Hawkins "no-one else could make you smile or laugh or dance or sing like he could".
"And for those of you that admired him from afar, I'm sure you've all felt the same thing," Grohl added.
"So sing and dance and laugh and cry and scream and make some noise so he can hear us right now."
Grohl was addressing as the Foo Fighters headlined an all-star tribute to Hawkins' life at London's Wembley Stadium.
The drummer was discovered dead in a hotel room in Colombia in March, just days before the Foo Fighters were scheduled to perform at a festival in Bogotá. He was fifty years old.
Although no cause of death was given, a toxicology study revealed residues of ten substances in his body, including opiates, marijuana, and antidepressants.
The musician's wife and bandmates planned the first of two concerts on Saturday night, with revenues going to the charities Music Support and MusiCares.
Sir Paul McCartney, Queen, and AC/DC were among the rock aristocracy that paid tribute at Wembley Stadium, with Liam Gallagher opening the event with an appropriate rendition of Oasis' Rock And Roll Star.
