WHO calls for 'urgent action' to be taken against monkeypox in Europe

The World Health Organization wants instant work to prevent the spread of the other variant Monkeypox, all throughout Europe.

Noting the cases have tripled in the region over the past two weeks, strict action needs to be taken.

Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri Kluge said, "Today, I am intensifying my call for governments and civil society to scale up efforts... to prevent monkeypox from establishing itself across a growing geographical area."

"Urgent and coordinated action is imperative if we are to turn a corner in the race to reverse the ongoing spread of this disease."

Kluge continued, "Europe remains at the center of the expanding outbreak and the risk remains high."

Since early May, a spike in monkeypox cases have been detected outside the West and Central African countries where the viral disease is considered an endemic.

For the unversed, monkeypox is related to smallpox, which killed millions around before its eradication in 1980, but has far less severe symptoms.

However, the virus is not a basis of international concern but it's position should be reviewed shortly.

As per statistics, monkeypox is far more in men who are gay, of a young age and chiefly from urban areas.
