Screenwriter Paul Haggis faces a major setback as he gets detained in Italy over sexual assault charges, on Sunday.
The Italian police force took quick action after claims of him raping a woman on Ostuni did rounds.
The woman was found in a mess at a local airport, allegedly left by Haggis in the morning despite her precarious physical and psychological conditions.
Airport staff were kind enough to inform the police officials, who immediately took her to the hospital, La Presse.
Haggis’ attorney Priya Chaudhry, who is now fighting the case for him, denied all accusations in an email saying, "Under Italian Law, I cannot discuss the evidence. That said, I am confident that all allegations will be dismissed against Mr. Haggis. He is totally innocent, and willing to fully cooperate with the authorities so the truth comes out quickly."
The acclaimed director was in Italy to teach some master classes at an upcoming film festival, commencing this Tuesday but he has now been removed of that honour following rape allegations.
However, the girl’s age and nationality has been kept under wraps for now.
