Grammy-award winning country music artist Naomi Judd, who was part of The Judds duo, passed away at 76.

In a statement on Sunday, Judd’s daughter and country singer Wynonna and actress Ashley Judd confirmed that their mother passed away to "mental illness".

"Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness," they wrote in a statement.

"We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory."

With her daughter Wynonna, Naomi went on to being the most successful mother-daughter acts in country music before the group stopped performing in the 1990s.

Last year it was announced that The Judds were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame .
