Halle Berry talks about representation in the film industry at award winning speech

On Sunday, singer Halle Berry delivered a heartfelt speech after winning an award in order to promote the need for representation in the film industry.

She was honoured with a SeeHer award at the 27th Critics Choice Awards.

Berry continues to advocate for more tales about women's lives and expressed pride in being part of a generation that can share their own experiences.

At the speech, the Let Me In crooner talked about her directorial debut Bruised, "I was perplexed as to why the character in the script couldn’t be black, prompting me to confront the filmmakers."

"I knew the role wasn’t intended for someone who looked like me the first time I read the script for Bruised… So I approached the producers and inquired, 'Why not me?'

"Finally, when the movie was released, I asked someone what they thought of it. 'I have a terrible time watching a woman get pummeled and beaten,’ he remarked. It made me feel a little uneasy.'

"And it was then that I realised why I had to tell the story. I was well aware of the story’s potency. ‘Imagine being that lady, experiencing that narrative,’ I continued. ‘If you had a hard time, if seeing that story made you uncomfortable, imagine being that woman, living that experience.'"
