Queen Elizabeth took to her annual summer trip to one of her favorite places, Balmoral Castle in Scotland. However, it is the first summer trip without Prince Philip.

The monarch, 95, left Windsor Castle on Friday for Balmoral, where she and Prince Philip traditionally retreat from August until the fall. This trip marks the first summer holiday the Queen will spend without her husband since his death in April at the age 99.

Balmoral has been always special for the royal couple, not only where they spent part of their honeymoon, but where the family could really be themselves away from the eyes of the media.

Traditionally, the Queen hosts members of the royal family at Balmoral throughout the summer. The family will now take turns spending time with the Queen at Balmoral over the rest of summer.

The Queen will receive visits from Prince William and Kate Middleton with their three children, Princess Eugenie and mom-to-be Princess Beatrice and their husbands and her four children.
