Amal Clooney's humor on how she and Meryl Streep both married George Clooney

Amal Clooney is indeed an inspiration for a lot of women who aspire to be lawyers one day. The woman has recently earned herself a Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award for her work as a human rights activist.

What’s interesting is that the award was presented to her by Meryl Streep, husband George Clooney’s first wife. While accepting the award, Amal thus joked about her famous husband as she thanked Meryl for the kind words.

"You are an inspiration as a woman, as an artist, as a press-freedom advocate," Amal told Meryl in her virtual acceptance speech.

"I know I can't ever hope to win the number of awards that you've won, but it does occur to me that we have something special in common, which is that we've both been married to my husband. And honestly, the fact that you did it as Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic Fox just makes that so much less awkward."

It is indeed true that Meryl and George have not worked in a lot of films after their divorce, but their last work in Mr. Fox was very well acclaimed. The movie that was an adaption of Roald Dahl’s novel also got nominated for Oscar 2009. The estranged partners voiced over the lead married couple in the movie.

Even after the divorce, George and Meryl have always had good intentions for each other. There have been incidents when George even defended Meryl in public. One such time is when President Donald Trump tweeted that Meryl was "overrated" following her criticism of him in her blistering 2017 Golden Globes speech.

George took no time to respond to Trump’s unfair comment and protected his ex wife with his famous wit.

"I've always said that about Meryl, she's maybe the most overrated actress of all-time. She and I worked together on Fantastic Mr. Fox as husband and wife, and I will tell you even as a fox, a female fox, she's overrated," joked George.
