Prince Harry tells story behind the name of his memoir, Spare

According to Prince Harry, King Charles III designated him as a spareon the day of his birth.

The Duke of Sussex, 38, asserts this in his memoir Spare, which was released on January 10, according to a Wednesday story from The Guardian.

The 416-page text shares the story towards the beginning, according to the outlet.

"Early on, Harry recounts the story of how his father, now King Charles, supposedly said to his wife, Princess Diana, on the day of Harry's birth: 'Wonderful! Now you've given me an heir and a spare – my work is done,' " the outlet reported.

According to a U.K. publication, the text's "unifying theme" is Harry's "resentment of being the 'spare'," "which apparently reflects on his upbringing, time in the British Army, years as a working royal, and interactions with family members.

The younger brother of Prince William and the second child of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, Prince Harry was born on September 15, 1984.

The title of the Duke of Sussex's upcoming biography, Spare, is taken from the proverbial "heir and spare," which alludes to Harry and William's divergent paths since conception.
