Prince William and Kate Middleton has officially renewed their titles after the death of Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96

Following the news of Queen Elizabeth's passing, Prince William and Kate Middleton changed their titles.

The official KensingtonRoyal Twitter and Instagram profiles were modified to state that the "Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge" are the accounts' owners shortly after Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that the Queen, 96, had passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The eldest son of the current British monarch holds the title of Duke of Cornwall, while his wife holds the title of Duchess.

Both Prince William and Kate, both 40, have held the honours Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Queen, William's grandmother, awarded the titles to them on their wedding day in April 2011.

The titles of Prince and Princess of Wales are also anticipated to pass to the couple. Prior to the Queen's passing on Thursday, King Charles III, who held the title of Prince of Wales, also held the Scottish titles of Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay.

For those unversed, as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend, Prince William and Kate most recently travelled to Wales with their two oldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
