Prince William joins social media sports boycott to tackle abuse
Prince William has backed the football teams and players’ social media boycott this weekend to protest against the online abuse.
The Duke of Cambridge made his announcement on Friday via social media post that he is joining a four-day social media boycott organized by England's high-profile soccer clubs and their players.
The boycott will continue until Monday, May 3, with hopes to encourage social media companies to take stronger action against racist and sexist abuse online.
William, who is head of English soccer's governing body, The Football Association, signed the campaign with ‘W’ and wrote, "As President of the FA I join the entire football community in the social media boycott this weekend."
A message alongside the post reads, "This weekend we join the football community in the UK in uniting for a social media boycott from 3pm on Friday 30 April to 11.59pm on Monday 3 May, in response to the sustained abuse received online by players and many others in the football community."
The football-led campaign, which has received the support of leading sports bodies and also been backed by British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, started on Friday for three days, as a show of solidarity to tackle racism, abuse and discrimination.
